What Are Privacy Zones?

Privacy zones are areas within a camera's field of view that are intentionally blocked from AI detection and, in some configurations, from recording entirely. They appear as blacked-out rectangles on the video feed. Anything that happens inside a privacy zone is invisible to the system -- no detections, no alerts, no snapshots.

Why Privacy Zones Matter

Even when your cameras are pointed at your own property, their field of view often extends beyond your boundary. A neighbour's window, a section of public pavement, or a communal area might be partially visible. Without privacy zones, your system could inadvertently detect and record activity in spaces where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

POPIA and Your Obligations

South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) applies to CCTV systems. If your cameras capture images of identifiable individuals -- even unintentionally -- you are processing personal information and must comply with the Act. Key obligations include:

  • Lawful purpose: Your surveillance must have a legitimate reason (security qualifies, but blanket surveillance of public areas may not).
  • Minimality: Only capture what is necessary. If your camera can see your neighbour's garden but does not need to, mask it.
  • Transparency: Signage indicating that CCTV is in operation is strongly recommended.

Privacy zones are one of the simplest and most effective tools for meeting these obligations.

How to Configure Privacy Zones in CleverCam

Setting up privacy zones is straightforward through the CleverCam app:

  1. Open the app and navigate to Camera Settings for the relevant camera.
  2. Select Privacy Zones from the menu.
  3. Draw rectangles over the areas you want to exclude -- neighbour windows, public roads, or any area outside your property boundary.
  4. Save your configuration. The zones take effect immediately.

You can create multiple privacy zones per camera and adjust them at any time. It is good practice to review your zones periodically, especially if you reposition a camera or if new structures are built nearby.

A Responsible Approach to Security

Privacy zones demonstrate that effective security and respect for privacy are not mutually exclusive. By taking a few minutes to configure them properly, you protect your neighbours' privacy, comply with the law, and ensure your system only focuses on what truly matters -- keeping your property safe.
